In his annual report on 1928, when the regime still looked shaky, [british] Ambassador Barclay wondered “whether the decline of Portugal is an inevitable consequence of racial inferiority”. Citing the prevalence of tuberculosis and syphilis (80 per cent) and high levels of illiteracy (60 per cent), and declaring the Portuguese “almost all incurably emotional, volatile, incapable of sustained effort or logical thought”, he opined that this was all the result of racial mixing and the climate having made the nation “physically, mentally and morally degenerate”.

Pelos vistos, não mudámos muito desde 1928 (tirando a parte da sifilis e tuberculose). Eu pessoalmente sempre fui incuravelmente emocional e incapaz de esforço continuado e pensamento lógico. O Clima parece-me um bode expiatório porreiro (e hoje é um bom exemplo! Só os turistas ingleses é que andam nas ruas a apanhar escaldões). Quanto à minha mistura árabe-judaica-e-sabe-deus-que-mais, funciona bem noutros sítios por isso não me parece que seja daí que vem o bicho.
Resta-nos esperar que, depois do aquecimento global, e quando começar a nova idade do gelo, o território português fique com um clima mais propício ao pensamento lógico.
